Frequently Asked Questions
What does a midwife do?
A midwife is a licensed health professional who cares for people with uteruses from preconception to pregnancy and beyond. They offer comprehensive prenatal care with a more personable touch, typically with an emphasis on holistic, affirming, and trauma-informed care. In addition to caring for people in their childbearing years, midwives can also provide sexual health and wellness services to folks of all ages, such as STI screening, PAP smears, and sexual education. Some midwives work in hospitals, but many work outside of hospitals in birth centers or with homebirth clients.
What does a doula do?
A doula is a non-medical support person for people going through major life transitions, such as birth and postpartum. When assisting a pregnant person, birth doulas will meet with the family a few times before the birth of their child to connect with the family and discuss birth preferences & childbirth education, then will attend the birth to provide physical comfort measures and emotional support to the birthing person. They will usually follow up after the birth of the child as well. Postpartum doulas assist families in the postpartum period to ensure optimal healing and rest for the birthing person. They may assist with infant care, do light housekeeping, cook, or attend to anything that helps the birthing person rest, recover, and bond with their baby.
